Lisa Peschel (United Kingdom), lecturer, University of York, “Humor and National Identity in Cabarets from the Terezín/Theresienstadt Ghetto”

Dr. Lisa Peschel is a lecturer in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television at the University of York. She has been researching theatrical performance in the Terezín/Theresienstadt ghetto since 1998. Her articles on survivor testimony and scripts written in the ghetto have appeared in forums such as Theatre Survey, Theatre Topics and Holocaust and Genocide Studies as well as Czech, German and Israeli journals.

She has been invited to lecture and conduct workshops on Terezín/Theresienstadttheatre at institutions in the US and Europe including Oxford University, University College London and Dartmouth College.Her anthology Performing Captivity, Performing Escape: Cabarets and Plays from the Terezin/Theresienstadt Ghetto was published in 2014.

Awards include a Fulbright grant in the Czech Republic (2004-05), a Charles H. Revson Foundation Fellowship at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum (2009), and an Alan M. Stroock Fellowship for Advanced Research in Judaica at the Center for Jewish Studies, Harvard University (2010-11).

During her EHRI fellowship at the Jewish Museum in Prague she will conduct research on the authors of the plays featured in her monograph on Czech, German and Zionist performance in the ghetto.
