Daria Cherkaska

Daria Cherkaska, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (Rothchild Foundation Hanadiv Europe), specialises in both the history and archaeology of the Holocaust. She holds a PhD in the history of Ukraine from the Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University, and her thesis focused on the theory and history of Soviet archaeology (2018).

Her second doctoral thesis at Staffordshire University entitled “The application of forensic archaeological methods for Holocaust studies in Ukraine” was awarded with a PhD degree in March 2024.

Her research focuses on mass graves investigation in Ukraine based on the application of interdisciplinary approaches and combining various methods and techniques (non-invasive technologies, aerial and satellite imagery analysis, archival searches, oral history). Dr Cherkaska also has experience working as an archivist (2016-2018), and in the field of conservation of archaeological sites.

She was awarded a Yad Vashem Grant for Doctoral Students and Young Scholars in 2022.
