The EHRI Document Blog has a new post. Taking it in turns, institutes and EHRI fellows highlight a document from their collection or research, offering extra information about the people, places and events mentioned. The blog also investigates new ways to present and interpret documents using new online and digital tools. The new post is written by Jessica Green.

Kindertransport

In her blog, the Wiener Library’s Digital Engagement Manager Jessica Green discusses a series of letters written from children on the first Kindertransport to their families back in Germany. On 1 December 1938, approximately 200 unaccompanied German-Jewish child refugees boarded a train towards the Hook of Holland, where a ferry carried them to their new home in England. While in transit, they wrote postcards back home to their families in Germany describing the generosity and kindness they experienced along the route in Holland and the friends they were making along the way.

Jessica has visualised these letters on a map, allowing the blog’s readers to see all the places the children came from, where they stopped along the way, and where they arrived into England. Readers can read transcripts of the letters and click on names of places to see where they fall on the map and learn more about each place, with links to additional resources on the EHRI Portal and at the Wiener Library.
