Call for Applications for an EHRI Seminar in Frankfurt: “Holocaust and Exile”
Approaches, Sources, Methodologies
November 4 – 7 2024 | German Exile Archive 1933-1945 | Frankfurt am Main, Germany | Deadline for submissions: 30 June 2024
We are pleased to announce the forthcoming EHRI Seminar “Holocaust and Exile: Approaches, Sources, Methodologies”, which is co-organized by the Center for Holocaust Studies at the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History (IfZ) and the German Exile Archive 1933-1945 (DEA) as part of the German National Library, one of the leading archives in the field of exile studies. The DEA, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2024, will also host the event. We aim at a diverse group of participants and encourage especially junior researchers, archivists, librarians, and people working in memorial sites to apply.
EHRI strives to enhance and support excellent Holocaust research. Our goal is to interconnect the research community and to provide access to archival holdings and cutting-edge research, both digitally and physically. During this four-day event, participants will have the opportunity to gain in-depth insights into the holdings, activities, and offerings of the DEA. Its extensive archival holdings combine legacies left by persons forced into exile, exile-publications and archives belonging to exile organizations. Furthermore, participants will have the chance to learn more about the approaches and methodologies of exile studies and to familiarize themselves with EHRI’s digital services. The EHRI-Seminar will take place in Frankfurt am Main, home to one of the largest Jewish communities in Germany before the Holocaust, and therefore strongly linked to the history of the German exile.
What to expect from the Seminar:
- An introduction to EHRI’s digital services and activities
- Insights into the holdings and offerings of the DEA and source analytical sessions on sources from the exile context
- Presentation and discussion of new trends and debates in the field of exile studies
- Keynote presentations by renowned scholars
- Presentations and discussion of the participants’ research topics
- Excursions to museums and memorial sites
- Discovering the Jewish life and heritage of Frankfurt am Main
The seminar will be held in English and German. Please note that since participants will be dealing with sources written in German, solid comprehensive skills in German are mandatory.
EHRI will cover travel expenses and accommodation.
