EHRI Partner | Refugee Stories: An Innovative New Digital Resource by The Wiener Holocaust Library
EHRI’s partner The Wiener Holocaust Library have launched a new and innovative digital resource a Refugee Map. You can explore hundreds of refugee stories from The Wiener Holocaust Library’s Family Paper collections and follow the lives of individuals and families who fled Nazi persecution through unique and irreplaceable documents.
“This beautiful map stirred two emotions in me; sadness at all the lives torn up by war and persecution, but also happiness that at least some of these lives have now been carefully pieced back together. Losing connection with the past is a common experience for many refugees. This map helps people reconnect with their scattered pasts.” Lord Alf Dubs, refugee rights campaigner
Drawn from the library’s valuable refugee Family Papers, each collection traces a refugee’s journey through irreplaceable documents, including handwritten diaries, photograph albums, identity and emigration papers, Red Cross telegrams and audio-visual recorded interviews. These documents reveal and preserve the stories of the individuals and families that fled Nazi antisemitism and persecution in the years before, during and after the Second World War.
The launch event, at which Rachel Pistol (King’s College London and EHRI) gave the keynote talk, ‘Visualising refugee movements in the 1930s and 1940s’, is available online here.
